Reiki is neither a sect nor a church or other religious organisation. Reiki is simply the opening for a new energy – which once activated, acts positively on the body, mind and spirit. Once activated, this healing life energy will remain with the practitioner for life.

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning “Universal Life-Force Energy”. REI = universal KI = life-force energy. The “Ki” part is the same word as ‘Ki’ in Japan, ‘Chi or Qi’ in China (the Chinese word for the energy which underlies everything) and ‘Prana’ in India. 

 

Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to well-being. Acupuncture, T’ ai chi and Yoga are also based on the free flow of this energy in a person. Reiki is a system for channelling that energy to someone or oneself for the purpose of healing.

REIKI is the power of god that gives us life. You do not have to believe in Reiki to experience it. Similarly, you do not have to believe in the delicious taste of a fruit to be able to enjoy it – but you do have to take a bite.

What is Reiki?

 

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stressed, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

MIKAO USUI – The History of Reiki 

 

Mikao Usui was born on August 15, 1865, in the village of Yago in the Gifu Prefecture, where his ancestors had lived for eleven generations. His family belonged to the Tendai sect of Buddhism, and at age four, he was sent to a Tendai Monastery to receive his primary education.

 

The Reiki method, like many spiritual ways of healing, began when its creator experienced revelation. Reiki comes from Dr. Mikao Usui's understanding of the energy systems found in the body and the necessary balance between them. One of the unique things about this healing practice is that you can apply the healing practises to yourself as well as two others. Usui also saw Reiki as a vehicle for general wellness as well as healing specific ailments.

 

Reiki has been around for more than a century; the story of its origin is essential to understanding it as a physical and spiritual practice.

THE EARLY LIFE OF MIKAO USUI

 

Mikao Usui, also known as Usui Sensei was the founder of the Reiki symbol healing system. Born in 1865 to a wealthy Buddhist family, he had a traditional education from a young age. Usui went on to study in the local Buddhist monastery learning swordsmanship and Kikoi which is the Japanese version of Chi gong. He also got a formal education in medicine and psychology during his academic career

 

During his early life, Japan was in the Meiji era; it had just risen to prominence, and its leaders were making efforts to connect with the western world. Usui traveled around quite a bit during this time and learned about many different healing systems. He also had many different professions and started different businesses; some of these were successful and others were not.

 

HOW USUI SENSEI CREATED THE REIKI SYSTEM 

 

The Usui Sensei’s great awakening system came about after he fell seriously ill.  He contracted cholera during an epidemic in academic and had a near-death experience from which he eventually recovered. After that, he became interested in spirituality and decided to spend time in a cave in Mount Kurama. He spent 21 days there fasting and meditating, and on the last day he saw visions of symbols which revealed the Reiki Usui system of healing to him.
